Description
The Witcher meets Naomi Novik in this fast-paced fantasy rooted in Slavic folklore, from an assured new voice in genre fiction.
As a witch in the walled city of Chernograd, Kosara has plenty of practice treating lycanthrope bites, bargaining with kikimoras, and slaying bloodsucking upirs. There’s only one monster she can’t defeat: her ex, the Zmey, known as the Tsar of Monsters. She’s defied him one too many times and now he’s hunting her. Betrayed by someone close to her, Kosara’s only choice is to trade her shadow―the source of her powers―for a quick escape.
Unfortunately, Kosara soon develops the deadly sickness that plagues shadowless witches―and only reclaiming her magic can cure her. To find it, she’s forced to team up with a suspiciously honorable detective. Even worse, all the clues point in a single direction: To get her shadow back, Kosara will have to face the Foul Days’ biggest threats without it. And she’s only got twelve days.
But in a city where everyone is out for themselves, who can Kosara trust to assist her in outwitting the biggest monster from her past?
About the Author
G
enoveva Dimova is a fantasy author and archaeologist. She grew up in Bulgaria and now lives in Scotland with her partner and a small army of houseplants.
Foul Days is her English-language debut, coming in June 2024, with the sequel, Monstrous Nights, to follow in October. The duology, titled The Witch’s Compendium of Monsters, is a fantasy set in a world inhabited by the monsters from Bulgarian folklore, with some Cold War inspiration thrown in, in the form of a magical Berlin-Wall-like barrier. Foul Days was selected for the Author Mentor Match program, which involved working on the manuscript with a published author—and rewriting about two thirds of it. This taught her to never write a mystery without outlining it first.
Genoveva grew up in Varna, Bulgaria, a city on the coast of the Black Sea, full of sandy beaches, great seafood, and some of the most impressive Roman ruins on the Balkans. She moved to Scotland after being accepted to study Archaeology at the University of Glasgow. Immigration had been a bit of a spontaneous decision and, as it turned out, there was very little that could prepare you for the gloomy Scottish autumn. However, after arming herself with a very good umbrella and buying some waterproof boots, she quickly fell in love with the Scottish beaches and hills, culture, history, and sense of humour.
She worked as a field archaeologist for a few years, but nowadays mostly lurks in the lab and specialises in archaeobotany—the study of plants and how they impacted past societies in terms of food and drink, medicine and dyes, trade, agriculture, building, and ritual. If there ever was a career path perfect for a fantasy author, she might have just found it.
